Benners P.S. When you write to me let it be in Dutch (Be it remembered that the foregoing letter was written to my Father, Lucas Jacob Benners, by his Father, Lucas Benners -- when he was a youth at college in Amsterdam, Holland -- where he was sent from his home in St. Eustatia (West Indies) to be educated. E. G. Benners) BENNERS Coppied from the Records of the old Family Bible My great grandfather was Lucas Jacob Benners. My father was L. J. Benners. My father was educated in the city of Amsterdam. My ancestors were originally French Hugenots and fled at the time of the Edict of Navtes, from France first to England and thence to the Island of St. Eustalia, where they inter-married with the Dutch. My grandfather's family consisted of three sons and a daughter, namely: L. J. Benners, John Benners, Isaac Benners and Judith Altta Benners. My great grandmother's name was Anna Lindersay, niece of Admiral Du Ruyter who beat the English off the Dogger Bank. My father, after completing his education in Amsterdam, made the tour of Europe 1780. The same year he entered into business with his cousin (in London) John Hope Hyliger. They arrived in Charleston, S.C. the same year with merchandise to the amount of thirty thousand Sterling. The business it appears was not profitable from what cause is not stated in the manuscript. Soon after the dissoulution of the Copart my father paid a visit to Uncle John Benners of Clubfoots Creek and the next year was married to my mother, Sara Patridge, his niece 9th July, 1789. My father then returned with my mother to St. Croix and sold out to my uncle's his interest in the estate Bonna Esperance and permanently settled in North Carolina.
